Finding common ground for a fairer future
We are at a pivotal point in history. Huge increases in wealth in the UK in recent years have combined with high levels of wealth inequality to produce a record ‘wealth gap’; the richest 50 families have more wealth than the poorest half of the population. At the same time, poverty has increased to pre-pandemic levels, with nearly three in 10 children living in poverty, leading to increases in child mortality for the first time in decades. The UK is demonstrably unfair.
85% of the British public are concerned about inequality, and even those who are less worried about inequality in principle are concerned about its practical consequences: constraining productivity and economic growth, threatening social cohesion and democracy, and undermining a rapid transition to net zero. However, increasing levels of concern about inequality and unfairness among the British public are not being reflected in mainstream political debate and policymaking.
The Fairness Foundation has been in existence for less than four years, but has established itself as a credible, evidence-based voice that works in the space between think tanks, campaigning, academia and politics, making the case for action on inequality by diagnosing the problems and outlining effective solutions with the potential to unite the public, politicians and experts.
What are we doing to help build a fairer society?
Building and popularising a vision for a fairer society in Britain that can attract broad support
Making the political case for fairness by researching public attitudes to a wide range of fairness issues
Making the policy case for fairness and highlighting the most effective interventions to achieve it
Help us to build our impact
We are currently funded by the Persula Foundation, and in 2024/25 we are also being supported by the Thirty Percy Foundation. We now have an urgent need to build on our progress to date by ramping up our resources and our impact. We are seeking to raise an additional £100,000 per year, on top of our existing annual budget of £190,000, to enable us to hire a Deputy Director and to commission more research. We depend on donations and grants, as we do not receive any funding from government or from contracts.
We are very grateful for donations of any amount, especially for regular donations that allow us to plan ahead. Please help us to continue our work and to expand our impact by making a one-off or ideally a regular donation. Larger donations of £1,000 or more will be acknowledged on our website, with the donor’s permission (in the interests of transparency, we will publish the names and amounts of any donations that are above £5,000 a year).
We are also building a Fairness Funders Network of individual donors who are able to support us with a more substantial contribution to our work. The minimum annual donation to join this network is £10,000. Members of this network will also be named on our website, and will be able to join a quarterly call to discuss our activities and plans with our team. Please contact us if you would like to find out more about joining this network.
